Flannery1 O'Connor said that writing should be discouraged, not encouraged. "No way" says Indian writer, Shefali Sunderan Harsha. "Writing pays my bills."
"Stop kidding!" most people tell me, when I tell them I am a writer. "What is your real job?" People think writing is just a fun activity and nothing else. But for shoe-shopper, foodie, dreamer, chocoholic, drama queen, traveler, control freak, clutter phobic Shefali, it is a profession that pays her bills. Yes, Shefali lives the life most of us dream of. She is an inspiration to all of us. Shefali will reveal her secret here......
Consider Shefali your agony aunt in writing-related matters. She offers
advice on writing and freelancing, and provides you a sneak peek into
her life as a writer. She will be happy to answer your questions. We will soon start a discussion board where you can pour your heart out or cry our eyes out ......and like any good aunt Shefali will of course go off and do her shoe shopping??....kidding! listen and offer you advice
Dad will ask you to go to law school and mom will suggest getting a degree in business. But if you are writer, you will not listen to either of them. You will write. But here is the good news. Writing jobs can be secure and lucrative and it can be an actual profession. If Shefali can do it.....so can you!
When I ask aspiring writers why they want to write, they always yell out, "Oh,
It makes me so happy!" Their faces glow and their eyes sparkle. Happiness is
cute.....even desirable, but happiness alone will not make you succeed as a
freelance writer. Being a freelance writer requires discipline, patience, and a
very very thick skin ....like that of a rhinoceros. Getting published is even
more difficult than giving birth to twins......no even worse!....more like
giving birth to triplets. But if you absolutely hate 9-5 jobs, the grumpy boss
and the nosy colleagues....I say go for it! Let your own passion and Shefali's
worldly advice carry you forward. Be your own boss and make money doing what
you love!
Shefali says that to get to the greener pastures, you have to pass the in-between pink, blue, and yellow ones, too. Rejection is like a baptism of fire for writers.
But if you are confident of your worth, passionate about your work, and have an internal sense of discipline....no one can deprive you of a good earning. Here’s how to find those writing jobs and make good money.
